Wire gauze is a metal mesh placed on the tripod above an alcohol lamp when heating liquids. It consists of two layers of wire mesh sandwiching an asbestos-impregnated cotton cloth that has been soaked and air-dried. It is a common laboratory apparatus for chemical experiments.
