Details

This product, the Fumasep FAA-3-50 anion exchange membrane, is developed for use in electrodialysis and alkaline fuel cell applications, particularly with weakly alkaline solutions (1–2 M). As a brown transparent film with a thickness of 45–55 μm, it exhibits low specific surface resistance (0.6 Ω/cm² in chloride form, 0.10–0.15 Ω/cm² in hydroxide form) and high ion selectivity (95.5% in chloride form). The membrane offers a high ion exchange capacity of 2.02 meq/g (chloride form) and excellent conductivity, reaching 7.8 mS/cm (chloride form) and up to 45 mS/cm (hydroxide form). It remains stable across a pH range of 1–14, with a water uptake of 40 wt% and minimal swelling in chloride form. Provided dry, it requires activation prior to use, making it suitable for standard alkaline fuel cell and electrolyzer scenarios where efficient anion transport is critical.

Usage and Storage Recommendations

Pretreatment Methods (By Application)

Application Scenario Recommended Wetting/Activation Method Notes
Fuel Cell / Redox Flow Battery Soak in 0.5 M NaCl, 24–72 h Promotes swelling and stabilizes dimensional stability
Electrodialysis / Acid-Base Recovery Soak in NaCl or KCl solution, 12–48 h Avoids bubble entrainment
CO₂ Electroreduction / Water Electrolysis Convert to OH⁻ form: Soak in 0.5–1.0 M NaOH or KOH ≥ 24 h Operation under inert atmosphere is preferred
Long-term Storage Store in a dry, hermetically sealed, light-proof container Prevents moisture and CO₂ from degrading performance
Short-term Storage Immerse in neutral saline solution in a sealed container Suitable for pre-wetted membranes
