Battery Material Testing Cost: 2026 Pricing Factors

Canrud October 28, 2026 27

Battery material testing cost depends mainly on how many cells you build, how many cycler channels they occupy and for how long, which temperatures and rates you test, and which characterisation methods you add. Long cycle-life tests usually dominate because they tie up channels for weeks. Below we break down each driver, show one dated public price list for context, and list ways to trim the bill.

Quick answer

Cost = cell builds + channel time + characterisation + analysis and reporting.

Long cycling and multiple temperatures add the most.

Public university rates exist (example below, in EUR, April 2026), but commercial quotes vary by scope.

At Canrd, testing is quoted after a short scope call, with all costs listed upfront.

How much does battery material testing cost? The drivers

Driver

Why it moves the cost

How to control it

Cell builds

Each coin or pouch cell takes materials, assembly time and glovebox time

Agree the minimum cells for a fair spread

Channels × time

Every cell occupies a cycler channel for the whole test

Shorten tests where the question allows

Cycle count and rates

More cycles and slow rates mean longer tests

Set a stop rule (e.g. a capacity limit)

Temperature

Extra temperatures multiply cells and need chambers

Test the temperatures that matter to the question

Characterisation

XRD, SEM, EIS and others add instrument and analyst time

Order methods that answer a specific question

Analysis and report

Data processing and interpretation take expert time

Agree the report format upfront

Why cycling time dominates

A cycler channel can run only one cell at a time. A rate test may finish in days, but a cycle-life test at slow rates can hold a channel for weeks or months. Budget in channel-hours: number of cells × hours per test. That number, more than any single instrument, usually sets the cost of an electrochemical study. If you are new to cyclers, our guide to using a battery cycler for electrochemical testing explains how tests are set up.

A published example: university hourly and per-sample rates

Commercial labs rarely publish prices, but some universities do. Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) in Estonia lists these rates in its 2026 price list, confirmed on 29 April 2026 (prices exclude VAT and may change):

Service (TalTech, 2026)

Published rate

Electrochemical measurements and battery testing (incl. charge-discharge cycling, EIS)

€120 per hour

SEM/EDX

€100 per hour

XRD

€60 per sample (measurement only); €85 with analysis; €100 with consultation

Thermogravimetric analysis

€95–150 per sample

BET surface area

€60–150 per sample

How to trim the cost

  • Write the question first; drop tests that do not answer it.
  • Use a stop rule for cycle-life tests instead of a fixed long run.
  • Screen with fewer cells, then expand only for promising samples.
  • Send well-prepared samples so the lab does not re-dry or re-check them.
  • Group characterisation into one batch rather than many small orders.
  • Ask for raw data plus a short summary if you can analyse it yourself.

Comparing testing quotes

  • Same number of cells, repeats and conditions in each quote?
  • Cell builds included, or only testing?
  • Test duration and stop rule stated?
  • Which characterisation is included, and per sample or per hour?
  • Report contents and raw data format?
  • What happens to leftover samples?

Our material evaluation lab quotes each project after a scope call. Canrd’s scientists can help you shape a test plan that answers your question at the lowest cost. A cheaper test plan that misses your question is not a saving.

Frequently asked questions

How much does battery cycling cost per channel?

It depends on the lab and test length. As one public example, TalTech in Estonia lists electrochemical measurements and battery testing, including charge-discharge cycling, at €120 per hour in its April 2026 price list, excluding VAT. Commercial labs often quote per project, so compare total channel time, not hourly rates alone.

Why does long-term cycling cost so much?

Because each cell holds a cycler channel for the whole test, which can be weeks or months for slow-rate cycle-life work. Cost scales with cells × time. A stop rule, such as ending at a set capacity loss, and fewer repeat conditions are the most effective ways to control it.

Is XRD or SEM charged per sample or per hour?

Both models exist. TalTech’s 2026 list, for example, charges XRD per sample (€60 for measurement only) and SEM/EDX per hour (€100). Ask each lab how it charges and whether analysis and interpretation are included, because that changes the comparison.

Can I reduce testing cost by building my own cells?

Sometimes. Sending finished cells removes build cost from the quote, but the lab must trust your build quality, and inconsistent cells can waste channel time. Many teams send materials for the first round, compare results with their own cells, then decide.
